Lifting its title from the Led Zeppelin song of the same name,  the Dazed and Confused movie was movie written and directed by Richard Linklater in 1993. The director assembled a cast of unknowns, with a couple future stars like Ben Affleck and Matthew McConaughey in their debut roles. Released by Universal Studios, the Dazed and Confused movie didn't generate much heat around the time of its original release, pulling in less than $8 million. Over time, however, the Dazed and Confused movie achieved cult-classic status, garnering 36 positive reviews out of 37 on the movie review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes.

Set in 1976, the plot of the Dazed and Confused movie focuses on the last day of the school year at Lee High School in Austin, Texas, and weaves in and out of many characters' lives. The Star quarterback Randall Pink Floyd is asked to sign a pledge promising not to get high during football season. When classes let out, the incoming freshmen are subjected to harassment from the upper classmen. Male students are paddled harshly, while girls are squirted with ketchup and mustard and forced to propose to older boys.

The Dazed and Confused movie ends with a party held in the woods nearby, attracting a large group of students, most of them seniors. Floyd and others end their night by smoking pot on the football field. The police see this and call the football coach, who confronts Floyd about the group he hangs out with. The coach tells Floyd that he should be following the pledge instead of following his dope-smoking buddies. Floyd decides what's more important to him, throwing the paper at the coach and leaving with his friends.

Two soundtracks to the Dazed and Confused movie were released – the second was called Even More Dazed and Confused. The discs featured music from popular 1970s bands such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and  KISS and lesser-known 1970s bands such as Sweet and The Runaways. Both album covers of the Dazed and Confused movie soundtracks feature the logo of a dizzy-looking yellow smiley face.

Several fan websites are devoted to the Dazed and Confused movie. These websites offer a copy of the script, a brief yearbook of the characters, drinking games to play while watching the Dazed and Confused movie, and a list of things in the film that just don't add up.

Video rentals of the Dazed and Confused movie topped $30 million, prompting the suits at Universal Studios to capitalize on its cult status. After two stripped-down DVD releases, a commemorative box set edition of the Dazed and Confused movie was released in 2006. The Dazed and Confused DVD box set edition features a bonus disc that contains a making-of documentary, deleted scenes, interviews with the cast members (in character, no less), and footage from the 10-year anniversary celebration that brought Linklater and cast members together once again.

The Dazed and Confused movie is now name dropped in all-time favorite lists by directors such as Quentin Tarantino. Linklater may have had to bow to studio executives a couple times, but with the success the Dazed and Confused movie achieved over time it's clear his experiences of youth in the 1970s extended far beyond the boundaries of Austin, Texas.
