America had just retreated from an unwinnable war in historic defeat, the 37th President was impeached and resigned, gasoline shortages caused by an oil embargo created mile long lines of cars waiting to pay prices that approached the unthinkable dollar per gallon mark. No wonder everyone was Dazed and Confused in the 70's.
The 1993 Dazed and Confused soundtrack is a collection of music from the hottest bands and talent of classic rock of the 70s .
The title plays off the Led Zepplin classic 1976 cover of Jake Holme's "Dazed and Confused" in which the lyrics lament, “Been dazed and confused for so long it's not true…You hurt and abuse tellin' all of your lies” leading one to wonder whether Robert Plant was singing about a woman or about the leaders of the times.
Many of the artists that contributed music for the Dazed and Confused soundtrack are now members of the Rock and Roll Hall of fame including Lynyrd Skynyrd, KISS, ZZ Top, and Alice Cooper. The music and lyrics of the Dazed and Confused soundtrack powerfully creates a picture of the 70s and especially of being a teen during the 70s.
For instance, take Alice Cooper's “School's Out,” featured on the Dazed and Confused soundtrack. No song in history has better described the absolute joy of a kid looking summer directly in the face after that bell rings on the last day of school. Also on the Dazed and Confused soundtrack, KISS describes the simple teenage plans for that summer of 1976 with “Rock and Roll All Night,” while ZZ TOP is a little more direct about the focus of teenage lust with “TUSH.”
The Dazed and Confused soundtrack also includes Ronnie Van Zant's lyrics in “Tuesday's Gone” performed by Lynyrd Skynyrd. This song portrays an unfaithful girlfriend and a broken hearted boyfriend who gives up and sings with teenage angst, “Train roll on many miles from my home, See I'm riding my blues away.” The melancholy blues of this track mirrors the feelings of 70s teens who rocked and rolled all night long, found some Tush, and lost it all in one Dazed and Confused soundtrack.
Dazed and Confused as a movie didn't receive great reviews although for people who grew up in the 70s it was a fun trip down memory lane. Yet the Dazed and Confused soundtrack was a big hit. The cast did include some soon-to-be major stars including Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck and Adam Goldberg. The Dazed and Confused soundtrack added authenticity to an accurate portrayal of teenage life in 1976.
The Dazed and Confused soundtrack conjures up memories of flared pants, disco, and pot and head shops with rock and roll posters and incense, it's all there like a psychedelic haze. Teens in the 70s were were trying to figure out what was next, what was beyond the Beatles. In 1976, Dazed and Confused music summed up the teenage mindset that was all about looking for a party and someone to party with.
